Meet Ann Maria

Beauty trained my eye. Business sharpened it. Life gave me something worth saying.

I help people and businesses see what others overlook, understand what is not working, and turn hard-earned insight into better decisions, stronger businesses, and more meaningful human experiences.

I Am Not Building This Platform Because My Life Unfolded Perfectly. I Am Building It Because It Didn’t.

I am bringing together more than 30 years in the beauty industry, decades of business and leadership experience, creativity, community service, motherhood, reinvention, and hard-earned street smarts.

Everything I have lived has shaped the way I see people, businesses, and the experiences we create for one another.

Now, I am putting all of it to work.

Where I Come From

I was born in a small Nebraska town to older parents and raised in a home that often looked very different from the outside than it felt on the inside.

Long before I studied leadership or human behavior, I learned how to read a room. I noticed changes in people’s expressions, anticipated what might happen next, and paid attention to what was not being said.

That awareness began as a way of navigating life. Over time, it became one of my greatest strengths.

Today, I can walk into a business, a room, or a conversation and recognize where something feels disconnected. I see patterns, identify gaps, and ask the question underneath the question.

Some wisdom comes from education and professional training.

Other wisdom can only be earned by living.

Beauty Was My First Language

As far back as I can remember, I was fascinated by hair, makeup, fashion, fragrance, nail polish, and the countless ways people express themselves through personal style.

I mixed homemade lotions and cosmetics, experimented on my nieces and nephews, and became the friend everyone called before prom, homecoming, photographs, and special occasions.

Even then, I understood that helping someone look better was rarely just about appearance.

The right haircut, lipstick, or outfit could change how someone stood, spoke, entered a room, or saw themselves. Beauty could create confidence, connection, and a sense of possibility.

What began as childhood curiosity became more than 30 years immersed in the beauty industry, including more than 24 years as a licensed cosmetology professional.

Beauty has never been frivolous to me. It is identity, communication, creativity, ritual, and sometimes the first doorway back to yourself.

And yes—a little lip gloss never hurts.

From Behind the Chair to Inside the Business

My professional education did not happen in one place or follow one predictable path.

It happened behind the chair, at cosmetic counters, inside classrooms, at industry events, during sales meetings, across multi-location operations, and in conversations with people who wanted to feel seen and understood.

I became a licensed cosmetologist, salon owner, makeup artist, educator, consultant, business director, sales leader, trainer, and multi-unit operator.

My career has included work with respected professional brands such as KMS Haircare, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and HairClub. My experience has expanded across beauty, wellness, medical aesthetics, client experience, sales, team development, training, business operations, and leadership.

I have worked with people at nearly every level—from the client sitting in my chair to professionals building their careers, owners protecting their investments, and executives responsible for entire organizations.

Those experiences taught me something important: a business can have beautiful branding, talented providers, excellent services, and an impressive facility—and still fail to create an experience that makes people want to return.

The truth is usually found between the lines:

  • How people communicate
  • How employees are trained and treated
  • Whether expectations are clear
  • Whether leadership listens
  • Whether problems are addressed or avoided
  • Whether the experience delivered matches the promises made

Service creates trust. Systems create consistency. Leadership determines whether either one lasts.

When Life Does Not Follow the Plan

My life has included meaningful accomplishments, exciting opportunities, and work of which I am deeply proud.

It has also included personal trauma, career upheaval, unexpected job losses, financial uncertainty, painful misunderstandings, an accident that disrupted my independence, and seasons when the future I had carefully planned disappeared almost overnight.

I have built businesses, led teams, raised two daughters, supported a family, served my community, and helped other people recognize their potential. I have also found myself wondering how I would rebuild my own life when the title, income, stability, or plan I had counted on was suddenly gone.

I know what it feels like to work hard, act with good intentions, and still be forced to begin again.

Professionally, I have often been hired to identify problems, create accountability, and improve results. But I learned that not every organization asking for change is prepared for what meaningful change actually requires.

I have been praised for seeing the big picture and challenged for naming the uncomfortable details. For a long time, I wondered whether I needed to become quieter, smaller, or less direct to fit into places that did not know what to do with someone who could see what others were avoiding.

Eventually, I stopped asking how to make myself fit.

I began asking how I could use those qualities to serve people who were ready for greater clarity.

I Am Not Starting Over

I am not starting from nothing, and I am not abandoning everything that came before.

I am putting it together.

This chapter is about integrating everything I have learned through beauty, business, leadership, motherhood, creativity, disappointment, service, resilience, and reinvention.

My experiences have given me professional knowledge, but they have also given me something no résumé can fully explain: perspective.

I understand polished corporate language, but I also understand what happens behind the front desk, on the sales floor, inside the treatment room, around the kitchen table, and in the private moments when someone is wondering what to do next.

I understand the numbers, systems, and strategy behind a business. I also understand the human experience underneath them.

Because numbers can tell us what is happening.

People help us understand why.

Why Make It Make Sense?

Throughout my career, I repeatedly encountered people and organizations treating symptoms while avoiding the real issue.

Businesses wanted stronger results without examining the systems producing those results. Leaders wanted accountability without providing clarity. Brands wanted loyalty without building trust. People wanted transformation without being given the space to tell the truth about where they were beginning.

I created Make It Make Sense with Ann Maria to have the conversations that too often remain beneath the surface.

The podcast explores beauty, wellness, medical aesthetics, business, culture, leadership, relationships, reinvention, and the real human stories behind them.

I ask direct questions. I connect ideas that may initially appear unrelated. I examine what is being presented, what is actually happening, and what could be done differently.

This is not conversation for conversation’s sake.

It is perspective people can use.

Ann Maria & Co. is the work.

Make It Make Sense is the conversation.

The Artist and Storyteller

I am also a mixed-media artist and storyteller.

I work with color, texture, found objects, personal mementos, fabric, wood, and fragments of what came before. I am drawn to materials that already carry a history because I believe what has been broken, discarded, stored away, or overlooked can become part of something meaningful.

My creative process reflects the way I approach life and business: I look closely at what already exists, uncover the meaning within it, and create a more honest and compelling composition.

I believe art, beauty, music, storytelling, and human connection can reach places that ordinary language cannot.

My creative and editorial work has appeared in local publications, but my purpose is greater than simply having my work seen. I want it to help people feel, remember, question, connect, and heal.

A Life of Service

My experiences have taught me that success means very little if it does not add value to someone else’s life.

My community involvement has included serving as a court-appointed special advocate, facilitating courses and mentoring through Dress for Success Louisville, supporting restorative justice and civil rights initiatives, and graduating from Focus Louisville.

My professional affiliations have included the National Association of Women Business Owners and The Powder Group, a professional community for makeup artists.

Each of these experiences deepened my belief that people need more than advice. They need to feel seen, heard, respected, and equipped to move forward.

Our experiences matter most when we use them to help someone else.

What I Know for Certain

Clarity is not criticism. It is care.

High standards and humanity belong in the same room.

Beauty should help people recognize themselves—not erase themselves.

A successful business must work for its clients, its employees, and its bottom line.

Starting again does not mean you have failed.

The most important question is often the one no one wants to ask.

Reinvention is not erasing your past. It is finally understanding how to use it.

This Is Me Putting an Entire Life to Work

I am not speaking from a pedestal. I am speaking from experience.

If something I have lived or learned can help another person recognize a warning sign, avoid an unnecessary mistake, ask a better question, improve a business, rebuild their confidence, or feel less alone, then that experience was not wasted.

I cannot change everything that has happened to me.

But I can decide what I create from it.

Whether you are rebuilding a business, improving your client experience, developing your team, refining your brand, or navigating your own next chapter, I can help you uncover what is really happening and determine what should come next.

Bring me the problem no one has been able to explain.

Let’s make it make sense.

Ciao, bella!
